Portsmouth Awards

PORTSMOUTH AWARDS
Fakenham Bowmen is keen to encourage members to develop their abilities and reward them for this, so we support the Portsmouth Award Scheme.
The scheme is designed to help you practice and improve your shooting by scoring an AGB recognised round that will also go towards your indoor classification and handicap. It is shot at a standard distance, 20 yards, short enough to fit in an indoor range. The aim is to gradually improve your accuracy at that distance.
The Portsmouth round is 5 dozen arrows at 20 yards on a 60cm face, after 6 sighters. It uses 10 zone scoring (gold = 10,9 red = 8,7 blue = 6,5 black = 4,3 white = 2,1).
If you achieve a qualifying score twice then you can claim a badge. So, for example, if you score a total of 458 and 476 you can claim the badge for 450, and so on. The exception we have introduced is that if you achieve that score in a formal open competition, then only one score is needed.
The awards are given for scores of 300, 325, 350, 375, 400, 425, 450, 475, 500, 525, 550, 560, 570, 575, 580, 590 and the maximum of 600.
The Aims:
· To encourage archers to improve their accuracy at a specific distance which can be shot indoors.
· To provide a round which also can contribute towards AGB Classifications and Handicaps.
Our Rules:
The rules are not set by one organisation so there are different interpretations, these are ours:
· Scores need to be achieved twice to qualify for the award, or once in a formal open competition.
· The qualifying rounds must be shot on different days, only one attempt per shooting day.
· The round must be shot and scored under formal shooting conditions, so your arrow scores must be written down by another archer, you can’t score your own arrows.
· The awards must be achieved in sequence, once you claim an award you cannot later claim a lower one.
· Badges are awarded for achieving the score, regardless of bow type. (See Rules In Detail below).
· To claim an award, two counter-signed score sheets need to be submitted to Elaine and/or Paul.
Our Rules In Detail:
· You can now carry over scores from one shooting season to the next (previously this was not allowed).
· The round can be shot outdoors, although for tradition’s sake it would be nice to shoot it indoors.
· You can now interleave scores, so for example if you score 402, 434, 415, 431, you can use the 402 & 415 to claim a 400, then afterwards use the 434 & 431 to claim a 425 badge.
· Since badges are awarded for achieving the score regardless of bow type, this has implications:
· This means you cannot claim the same badge twice using different bow types.
· However, you can claim the first qualifying score on a different bow type to the second qualifying score, if you wish. · You can claim one value badge on one bow type and a different value badge on a different bow type, if you wish.
· This makes it similar to AGB Classifications, where you can achieve a given Classification using different bow types.
· Note that e.g. compounds will usually achieve higher awards than e.g. longbows.
